Why We Don’t Just Teach Kicks and Punches

By Paul Castagno
Founder, REAL Martial Arts

If martial arts were only about kicks and punches, it wouldn’t have changed my life.

I got into martial arts as a kid who struggled with confidence. I stayed because it built discipline, emotional control, and accountability.

That’s what we teach here.

Skill Is the Vehicle. Character Is the Outcome.

Yes, we teach:

  • Muay Thai

  • Jiu-Jitsu

  • Self-defense

  • Conditioning

But underneath that, every class is training:

  • Focus

  • Emotional regulation

  • Listening under pressure

  • Respect

  • Grit

When a student gets frustrated during sparring, that’s not a problem.

That’s an opportunity.

When a teen wants to quit because something is hard, that’s a moment that matters.

The REAL Difference

Our core values guide how we coach:

Remarkable Tenacity — Don’t quit when it gets uncomfortable.
Empowered Growth — Take ownership of your effort.
Authentic Connection — Support your team.
Limitless Impact — Lead beyond yourself.

We don’t yell or shame.
But we do hold a high standard.

Because every child needs people in their life who expect more of them than they do of themselves.

REAL Martial Arts has been serving families in Framingham, Natick, and surrounding MetroWest communities for over 20 years.
